The Legacy of Trauma: Context of the African American Experience

 

Course Overview: This course will explore the link between historical and current trauma related to the Black community our experiences, perceptions, beliefs and behaviors that may act as challenges in constructive development. We will discuss practical, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, outcome driven practices focused on progress.

Objectives:
• The attendees will learn how to describe adverse childhood experiences; trauma and toxic stress affect biological, physiological, social, emotional, and brain development and the findings of the ACE study.
• The attendees will learn how to describe a community’s adaptive response(s) to environmental circumstances and toxic stress.
• The attendees will learn how to make modifications to their work with families to incorporate an understanding of ACEs and an individual’s adaptive response(s) to environmental circumstances and toxic stress.
• Understand the importance of being aware of personal perceptions and beliefs so as not to add to the trauma.
